Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (Legal Aid) hosts the Builders of Justice Progressive Dinner Awards every year.  It is an event that highlights and recognizes honorees who have demonstrated extraordinary service benefiting low-income families in Collin County through their sustained service and leadership.  Over the last two years,  Legal Aid helped more than 7,100 clients in Collin County.

This year, as in 2020, circumstances dictate that we not hold our annual in-person event as we continue to maintain protections that safeguard the health and well-being of our staff and supporters. Now more than ever, organizations like Legal Aid need the support of donors to continue to serve the needs of those in our communities.  For the last 70 years, Legal Aid has provided free civil legal aid to more than 1 million low-income individuals and families seeking help with a myriad of legal issues such as:  domestic violence, sexual assault, eviction defense, homelessness prevention, access to benefits, employment barrier removal, consumer and finance, wills, estates, and probate.

Instead of an in-person or virtual event this year, we will be hosting a Phone-A-Thon in conjunction with an email campaign during the month of October.  We hope to continue building community awareness and secure financial support for the services provided to low-income families in Collin County.  In addition we want to strengthen our efforts in serving those who desperately need legal aid to help solve family legal problems for which they cannot afford to pay an attorney.  Since the pandemic began, calls to Legal aid have increased from Texans facing job displacement, food insecurity, or housing instability, as well as requests for help involving domestic violence.  These are but a few of the civil legal issues we assist with which range from foreclosure prevention and wrongful eviction, to driver license registration, consumer matters and end-of-life document preparation, and family law matters including violence and child custody.
